Okay, now all the meat eaters will kill me, ah! But I’ll be brave anyway and give you a few reasons why you shouldn’t buy meat at the supermarket. Of course, I do not want to shame you for doing so, each of us has a choice. But at the same time, if you want to be a good homemaker, you should prioritize your household’s health.
One of the ways to do that is to simply learn what is good for your family and what isn’t. We will not debate if eating meat is better than vegetarianism, we will focus on the good and bad sources of meat. And discuss why you shouldn’t buy meat at the supermarket eventually.
Probably not everyone will agree with me, and that’s great – I’m open to discussing this meaty topic. Nowadays there are so many opinions about what’s healthy and what isn’t, that hey, we can debate a little bit. 😉
Yet, the arguments I’m pulling out in this article are purely from my research and experience. I am not claiming I am absolutely right, but my general well-being after a few weeks of not eating meat from supermarkets proved me right. And I believe that meat bought at the supermarket is not good for you, too. Let me tell you why I think so.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy Meat at the Supermarket: 1. Animals in large breeding are not well-kept.
Let’s face it. A few dozen years ago the situation was completely different, the meat came from a normal farm where a chicken ran happily on the grass in the company of a cow calmly grinding. Well, idyllic.
And now? Phew, far from it, unfortunately. After reading Beata Pawlikowska’s book “In the Jungle of Health” out of curiosity I checked on the Internet where the meat in my Aldi comes from. And I felt sad.
I understand the idea of killing an adult hen for broth. God allowed us to eat meat (Bible, Acts 10), so I guess there is nothing wrong with it. But to squeeze one hen to another and yet another so tightly that it can barely breathe in the cage that becomes its home and also its grave? For me that makes a difference.
It just seems wrong to purchase meat made from an animal that was suffering, brutally killed, and probably did not live one happy moment in their life. I know, animals are not people, but they are creatures created by God as well, so I think they at least deserve to be kept in a clean, normal environment.
So if you don’t want to support such cruel breeding, then you shouldn’t buy meat at the supermarket.
2. These animals are being fed with powders instead of real food.
My dear reader, aren’t you happier after a full nutritional meal than for example eating a soup out of powder in a hurry? What if you only ate such soups? You would quickly notice your energy drop, concentration issues, and maybe even sadness. I believe the same rule applies to animals – if, as we know, they’re being fed chemical forage and they are pushed to eat at a fast pace, the results certainly are not the best.
And okay, not everyone may believe that all this fear and martyrdom of the hen is somehow preserved in the tissues of your nuggets, but most of you will probably agree that what these hens are fed must somehow affect the quality of the meat.
I don’t believe half of the vitamins and good nutritional values will survive in a slice of meat of a hen that has never eaten a proper meal in her life. And after I’ve tasted the meat from a farm or a forest, then oh my, the difference is huge. The taste is completely different. And if it does not even taste well, how we can expect such meat can do well for us?
So if you want to make sure the protein you’re consuming gives you nutritional values and vitamins, you shouldn’t buy meat at the supermarket.
3. They’re being fed antibiotics.
Perhaps some of you are nodding your head sadly and saying, “Yes, unfortunately,” but for me it was a shock. After all, antibiotics do not distinguish good bacteria from bad ones, because they are simply stupid, so the poor hen, which is probably fed with such stupidity regularly, has its intestinal microflora in a terrible condition. What about our microflora? I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to sabotage my immune system by consuming tissues that have leftovers from antibiotics just because I love nuggets.
When I still didn’t fully believe all this crap about antibiotics, my wise friend while we were passing the meat section in a supermarket, said. “See how beautiful it all is, so pink and bright? This is the color of antibiotics. Real, healthy chicken is yellow”. Ah! It makes sense!
So honestly, bad forage is one. But antibiotics? This is way too much. I don’t want to get sick every month, I want to be strong and healthy. And if you do, too, then you shouldn’t buy meat at the supermarket.
So Why You Shouldn’t Buy Meat At the Supermarket and What’s the Alternative?
After this revelation, my husband and I went to the local butcher. He had photos of his pigs and chickens stuck on the windows, the backgrounds of these pictures were not maybe of a perfectly green grass like the one you can see on a Windows wallpaper, but it was certainly GRASS, not a mulch.
And the meat? Delicious. And yellow as pee! Okay, not a very tasty comparison. Let’s go the more usual route – yellow as the sun!
Although pink is my favorite color, in this case, I will always choose yellow 😊

Now those are some ribs! Compliments to the chef.

Yes! Team yellow chicken!
