How Often Should You Organise Your Closet?

Once. 🙂

Or actually, as many times as you feel it is necessary, but if you do it right, one deep session of organizing should be enough. Of course, you can add minor changes later but the essence will stay the same.

See how much trouble it can save you? If you put a lot of effort and focus and organize your closet deeply, then there you go, and the effect of it will last a long time.

Some people try to organize their closets once a month, and it might be because their style and liking changes rapidly and often, but it can also be because they simply did not find the method that works.

That’s where I come in to help them 🙂 Because the truth is, the most important part of organizing your clothes’s space is the first step.

Which is…

1. Get Rid of Clothes

I mean it. If you skip it, you will still have a pile full of clothes that do not bring you joy and do not make you feel confident.

What I suggest you do, is put all of your clothes from the closet in one place and see how big it is. Do you enjoy that much of them? Imagine that among them you would leave only your favorite pieces. Wouldn’t life get better that way?

Maybe my opinion is not typical but I do think ugly clothes do not have a place in our lives. I wear my colorful dresses all the time – to the church, the groceries, and also at home. I do not have a piece of clothes that I do not feel good in in my closet. I got rid of those.

And then and only then I started to be fully content with my closet. And you can be too!

Go through every single piece separately, and get rid of worn-out, dirty, and stretched clothes in the first place. They do not flatter you at all. The only exception is for sentimental clothes so to call them. For example, I keep my old, messed up, and completely unusable Minion shirt simply because I had it on when I was in the church taking my first photo with my crush (now my husband :)).

Do not leave anything that does not make you feel nice in it. And nice means something else for everyone, so you do and get rid of things that do not bring you happiness.

And only after you’re done with that, move on to the next step:

2. Choose Your Segmentation

Okay, this word sounds way too serious 🙂 What I mean behind this mysterious “segmentation” is for you to pick an order of clothes the most suitable for you.

For example, I live in Hungary so we have clear differences in temperatures between summer/spring, and winter/autumn. That’s why it is easier for me to divide the content of my closet into two seasons – warm and cold. I pack clothes from the other season into a big box, take them to the storage, and switch when the seasons change.

It works well for me, but if you find it better, feel free to have all of the clothes in your closet at once. I mean, it can also depend on the size of your closet 🙂

You can order the clothes by the kind, color, or occasion. For example, shirts with shirts, dresses with dresses. Or formal clothes on the left side, the daily on the right side for example if the big part of your life is work.

Think about your lifestyle and choose the most beneficial way to organize your closet. It can be the craziest way, but as long as it works well for you, you’re in a good place.

3. Fold Wit Attention

If you carelessly start throwing clothes into the closet, the new order will be quickly lost. That’s why I recommend carefully folding clothes. I also thank God for clothing me every time I do that, and it keeps me grateful for what I have.

Shirts and other similar items can be stored in the boxes, folded or rolled so that you can see them all opening the closet. What should hang… should hang on a hanger.

I keep my most beautiful clothes on the hangers simply because I can see them immediately after I open my closet, they are displayed nicely, and that’s the least invasive way for them to be stored.

However you fold, it’s your thing. I have my tested way but I figured it does not always work for everyone. Just pick the easiest way for yourself and then master it. The essence of a successful way to organize your closet is to adjust it completely to you and your lifestyle.

You’ve Got This!

I hope these 3 simple ways will help you during the next session of reordering the kingdom of your clothes. And I also hope this time it will be fun! 🙂

And if you organize your closet and see that you lack a few essentials, you can head on to the article that will help you create a lovely capsule wardrobe.

I’ll see you there I hope 🙂

Love, Marysia
