Berets are classy French hats and they are one of many symbols of fashion. You probably appreciate this lovely type of hat too and are thinking about how to wear a beret – fashionably, confidently, and Frenchy.
I was always in love with these hats – they seemed so timeless and appeared in many colors and shapes.
One day I saw a group of older ladies heading to the church. Their berets had sad, barely pigmented colors and they were positioned on their heads… well, a little bit weird. Then I realized that wearing a beret is also a skill! Today I’m going to teach you how to wear a beret so you glow! 🙂
WHO Should Wear a Beret?
“Oh Marysia, I love your yellow beret! But I would look awful in that” – I heard it from one of my friends.
To be honest, I cannot disagree more. Since berets come in some many variants and colors, everyone can find something for themselves. Including my stubborn friend 😉
I think the problem is not if one SHOULD wear a beret (to look good, of course) but rather HOW to wear a beret (again, to look good).
I could bore you with the wide chunk of berets’ history, black and white pictures, and so on and so on. And I bet it would (maybe) be interesting to you too, but instead let’s jump to the thing you came here for – you want to learn how to wear a beret! Me and my 6 (the collection still growing :)) berets are going to deliver that lesson.
How to Wear a Beret – the Classic (Slavic?) Way
Officially it is called “the classic” but I’ve seen berets being worn like this mostly in Slavic countries. Including my motherland – Poland!
This way is perfect for advanced autumn and winter when you want to protect your ears from the cold.
It is certainly a cute way of wearing this French hat and is simple enough to pull off.
Back of the Head
This is a more creative variation of the classic/Slavic way and can give you a glamorous look easily.
This way does not necessarily suit everybody and there is a risk of it sliding down in a bigger wind. I mean, if you feel good in such a way and you do not live in the windy mountains, this way can be perfectly fine.
It looks very elegant and has this French vibe.
On the Side
Definitely my favorite answer to how to wear a beret. It was created to be worn tilted so now wonder why this way just seems proper.
This look will give you fashionable asymmetry and a French vibe.
Pancake
It is also wearing a beret on the side, yet more intensely in a sense – pushing it even further to one side or the other. This looks fashionable and if you let one ear out, you can expose the earring that you decide to wear with it.
It is one of the most artistic ways to wear a beret and if that’s the vibe you’re going for – pancake is for you.
On a Bun
If you’re aiming for a timeless and chic look, you can see in the picture how to wear a beret on a bun. It can be a side bun or a centered one, yet remember – it has to be low. Otherwise, beret will just sit either too high on your head or will hug the bun awkwardly.
I hope it makes sense haha Remember, as long as it seems to be looking right, it probably is – so do not be afraid to experiment with these ways on how to wear a beret.
How to Wear a Beret With an Addition
Adding a bow or a flower can give your beret a more interesting look. But how to wear a beret with decorations?
It is best to place him on a side position (do not unfold the inside part!) and then place your decoration on the opposite side to where the beret is falling. I’ve tried my best to explain it so that it makes sense but it is probably the easiest if you just see what I meant here 🙂
How to Wear a Beret in the Outfit
The skill of how to wear a beret is not only about the position of the hat on your gorgeous head but also about what you are wearing it.
The key is not only to wear it plainly but to style it with confidence. There are a few elements that pair with the beret perfectly and create a happy marriage.
In case you are not sure what will look good with your beret, these options are your safe bets:
French Stripes
This iconic look will never be out of fashion. You can go super classy and wear black and white stripes with the red beret or make some artistic adjustments.
No matter which variant you choose – berets LOVE stripes in any form. You can play around with the colors and textures as much as you want, but if you stick to this base, you can be sure your French outfit attempt will be successful.
With a Trenchcoat
Up for a timeless autumn look? You can wear a beret with a trenchcoat. The classic Parisian variant would be aiming at colors such as black, beige, or other neutrals.
But since I am an ambassador of more colorful style, I would say – add some colors! Adding vibrant shades to this classic pair of beret + trenchcoat can create a fresh version of it.
Plus, in such colors all the glances are yours!
The Professional Look
If you want to add a professional spin to your beret-based outfit, a blazer or a whole suit will do the job.
You feel like wearing a blazer you will wear a turtleneck? Sure, it will give you an even more elegant look.
If you’re going with the suit, I would recommend picking a beret with contrasting or simply more vibrant color – it will make it pop and expose the beret perfectly.
Chilled, More Casual
Berets do not always need to be styled in a sophisticated way. It is suitable for more daily outfits as well!
That’s why I love this type of hat so much – you can wear it with anything and it will adjust.
The easier way to use a beret in a more casual outfit is to wear it with a sweater. It will give a cozy vibe and make you look super cute.
Feminine
The most girly way to wear a beret is with a skirt. Yes, you can experiment with all kinds of skirts, yet it will look best with an A-shaped one that reaches the knees or goes even lower.
It will give the vintage spin to it, yet still look elegant.
I love painting berets with longer skirts – it seems almost as timeless as fries with ketchup.
How to Wear a Beret as a French Princess
Who said berets do not go with the dresses? Of course, they do! Polka dots, flower patterns, jeans… you name it.
You can pick an accent color and ear a beret in it together with a bag in the same or similar shade to create a cohesive look.
The most classic combination is a polka dots dress and a beret in any matching color.
Which Beret Should I Wear…?
I would say – any that you want! But of course, there are colors of berets that will look better on one person than the other.
So let me pick your best one then 🙂
If your beauty type is winter (cool skin, dark eyes, and hair), you will look fantastic in intense color. For example fuchsia, red, or dark blue.
If you are autumn (warm skin, rich eyes, red or brown hair), you will look best in a brown, dark green, or mustard yellow.
In case you are summer (with cool skin, bright hair, and eyes), light blue, pastel pink, or lavender will suit you the most.
And finally, the best berets colors for spring (warm skin, bright eyes, warm hair) beauty type are candy pink, beige, or gentle green.
