Marriage Anniversary – How to Spend It an Unforgettable Way

Marriage anniversary is an important day – no matter if it is 1st one or the 25th. You want to spend it together and create the most memorable moments.

It can sometimes be challenging to start marriage anniversary traditions that are original and meaningful at the same time.

Me and my husband were very intentional about our every anniversary making each of them magical by keeping our traditions. It is totally possible to have a more creative and memorable marriage anniversary than ending up in a casual restaurant.

So I’ve decided to share with you some tips on how to make your marriage anniversary unforgettable. Let’s dive right in!

Why Marriage Anniversary Is Such an Important Occasion?

Some people do not find birthdays, holidays, or anniversaries important at all.

Yet, I think it deserves some celebration for sure. Good memories, defeated problems, successes and failures. Many things happen in your marriage during a year.

Some of them are revolutionary – like, having a baby, moving out or having your first abroad vacation together.

It all is worth celebrating! Having this one day to reflect on passing events can make you appreciate your relationship even more, see where you both can grow, and simply enjoy it.

I think it is important for both spouses to be on the same page when it comes to marriage anniversary. Do you both want to go big? So do it. One of you would prefer something more… calm? Find a compromise.

BUT if one of you loves anniversaries and finds it very important and the other is like “Eh, whatever” I would recommend such a couple to lean towards celebrating it somehow.

Because I think it is worth it for one person to compromise one day a year than for the other one to feel neglected probably for many more.

So… How to Spend It?

Well, there are many traditional ways like going to an expensive restaurant and getting each other fancy gifts. If that’s your cup of tea, sure, go for it.

But I find it a little bit boring honestly. You want this day to feel special.

Finding the right spot between tradition and creativity is what we’re aiming at.

Creative Ways to Spend Marriage Anniversary

I think it is sweet to set a few small traditions that you stick to every year.

It will give you the feeling of stability and can bond you two pretty strongly.

But also to add some adventure to this special day, it would be great to come up with something new every year.

Sounds impossible? Actually, it’s not that hard. I’m here to hand you some ideas 🙂

1. Breakfast in Bed

You saw it a few times in the movies probably. Yup, me too 🙂

Maybe that’s why my aunt after my wedding was over and I was heading home with my fresh husband, advised me: “Drink the orange juice in the morning!

So imagine orange juice, croissants, and white bathrobes. Isn’t it a stereotypical image of a romantic morning?

Maybe let’s take what’s best in this stereotype and give it your own twist.

For example, you could make a tradition that you order a fancy breakfast and you eat it in bed.

A bed is actually a nice place to have deep pillow talks, maybe go through your photo albums, or do other marriage-related things 😉

2. Weekend Getaway

Who said an anniversary needs to last only one day? You can extend it even up to a whole week if you want!

Traveling together is a great way to cut yourself off from daily problems for a while and simply enjoy each other.

Maybe such a small trip could become your marriage anniversary tradition? You can pick different destinations each year and see the world together.

Or go to the same place each year, that’s also a wonderful idea.

What I know for sure is that traveling as a couple brings the romance back instantly!

3. Put On Your Wedding Clothes On Your Marriage Anniversary

I never understood why a lady would spend a fortune on a wedding dress and then get rid of it just like that.

I knew I’m going to keep mine and good for me, my husband had the very same idea.

So we decided to wear our wedding clothes every year on the anniversary. This way we bring back this excitement and freshness of our love back.

And also, that’s a good motivation to stay fit 😉

If you do not have your wedding dress anymore or parading in it in public does not seem comfortable for you, nothing is lost.

You can still make your tradition by putting on the fanciest clothes you have and heading somewhere together. Your favorite restaurant if you’re traditional or a new place if you’re craving some adventure.

Dressing up for your spouse is a wonderful idea. We often put on our best clothes, makeup, and perfumes when we go out to meet other people, and our spouses see us mostly in sweatpants.

Putting on something wow once in a while just for each other reignites the spark!

4. Visit the Place Where You Got Married

A church, the forest, the castle – wherever it was and you have a possibility, you can visit this place.

It will bring back memories and let’s be honest – it’s super romantic!

We also do this one with my husband – every year we travel to the castle next to which we had our wedding.

Such an idea connects traveling together with romantic vibes.

5. Follow the Jar of Dreams

If you like surprises, you could gather ideas for spending your marriage anniversary in a jar or a box and pull one idea when the day comes.

It is really spontaneous but I know many couples that would enjoy it.

This also guarantees you something different every year.

6. Create a Photo Album

What is during the anniversary you would sit down together and go through all the pictures you took this year?

That would for sure bring a lot of laughs and feelings. You could pick the best ones and place them in an album to create one every year.

Such a tradition could be lovely for your (future) kids – they could see how mommy and daddy were in love.

7. Live Out the Love Story

What if you pretended you were not married for this one day? act out your first meeting and just play a little bit.

This fun game actually teaches you something important – your spouse is not granted.

If you like to spice things up and get flirty, that way of spending a marriage anniversary can turn out fun!

8. Something Unusual

Look, anniversaries are so special they deserve to be celebrated in unique ways.

If you never go to theatres, maybe that’s a perfect occasion to do this?

Swimming pool, theme park, or eating sushi, picking up cherries – whatever you usually don’t do together. Creating new experiences as a couple can create unforgettable memories for you two.

9. Marriage Anniversary as Newlyweds Again

Reliving your honeymoon literally or metaphorically can be a good idea too.

Remember how you enjoyed watching movies together and you were experimenting in the bedroom? Make a list of things you did freshly married and plan a day according to them.

We constantly need reminders of how we once fell for each other because when things get hard, it is so easy to forget.

10. No Internet Day

Wouldn’t that be fun to be completely focused on each other? Get lost in the city, feel like in older times?

So as you see spending your anniversary completely off screens can be an exciting idea.

Of course, no matter how you decide to spend your marriage anniversary, phones should be put out, but you can get adventurous and turn them off completely.

This will motivate you to find more creative ways of spending time than Netflix and chill 😉

Your Marriage Anniversary, Your Way

You can use the ideas presented above separately, combine them, or create your own variation.

Do not feel under pressure to do great unique things when you and your spouse just want to cuddle the whole day and feel like it’s perfectly enough.

Such a day should feel special but it does not always require fireworks. The fireworks need to be in your hearts in the first place. 🙂

Wonder what to get your husband for the anniversary? I have 101 ideas for you here!

Love, Marysia
