If you are a Christian who wears modest clothes but also likes to add a pinch of color to your daily outfits – we already have two things in common! 🙂 I’ve found a few must-have pieces of clothes that are modest and colorful to elevate your God-glorifying wardrobe.
If you are starting your journey with modesty, but still want to be colorful and fashionable, this list will be perfect for a start.
1. Seamless Underwear
When I started to pay attention to my clothes and making sure I was being nicely covered and not provoking even slightly, I so underestimated the power of underwear!
You can wear the most beautiful modest dress, but if for example, the panties line is visible under the fabric… it starts looking very inelegant and sometimes even inappropriate.
That’s why before you invest in anything else, make sure that you’ve got yourself at least one set of seamless, discreet underwear.
That way you will make sure you look lovely and elegant in every outfit. Just like the Scripture is your Armor of God, decent underwear is the armor of your body.
And no, you don’t need to go to expensive underwear salons – even though it’s always a nice experience – because you can get such underwear at a pretty cheap price, too.
2. Colorful Tights
Tights are a game changer because they allow you to wear summer dresses and skirts also during the autumn and winter. Plus, they can make your outfit more interesting if you pick a unique color.
Tights are feminine and also can be modest and colorful. You can pick the plain ones or patterns according to your style.
I have a big collection of colorful tights in my closet and I think that’s one of the essentials that are needed for modest dressing. I think it is perfectly enough to have 3-to 4 pairs, but of course, as a colorful fashionista, you can extend your collection regularly.
The list for a start:
- classic black ones
- red like the blood of Christ
- skin color ones – I do not have these simply because if I am already putting on tights, I want to make sure they shine with color 🙂 But I know many women like the skin color tights once in a while.
- special ones with patterns – these would make a lovely addition to your closet, I guarantee you 🙂
I think by now it is clear I am obsessed with tights – that’s exactly why in my store I have a whole selection of unique and special tights that can make you look original and one of a kind. If I’ve managed to pass a little bit of this love to tights to you, make sure to check it out 🙂
3. Modest and Colorful Dresses
This is a must-have for every Christian lady. Of course, you can wear trousers and still be modest – but dresses are so cute and feminine that even trousers lovers give up under their charm sometimes.
I’ve written a separate article with the 8 best church dresses that one should have, so you can jump there if you are interested.
For now let me tell you that a decent, modest dress changes everything. You not only look magnificent and feel that way but you also spread this energy of high values.
I cannot explain it, I guess that’s the hidden magic of dresses 🙂
There are so many designs and colors that the earthly shade of a long-sleeved maxi dress is not the only modest option anymore. Sure, it’s good for the majority of your skin to be covered, but we do not need to wrap every inch of it like in a burrito.
There is no golden rule here but after many talks with Christian men and women and nearly 10 years of exploring God’s vision for fashion I can advise you on these:
- If it feels too tight, then it IS too tight.
- Aim at dresses to your knees or longer.
- Spaghetti straps or no sleeves are risky.
- Uncovered back may look attractive, but certainly not modest.
- Exposing general lines of your figure like the waist – fine. Exposing detailed lines like cleavage or your butt – not fine.
These tips about modesty are purely subjective, but my husband approved them, so hey, there’s something to them 😉
4. Modest and Colorful Skirts
There is a wide choice of modest and colorful skirts nowadays. Maxi, midi, cute ones, more mature style ones, etc.
Skirts look good with everything – sweaters, blouses, shirts… to each their own.
There are so many kinds of skirts that I cannot give you a specific list for you to start your modest and colorful capsule wardrobe, but there are a few that are certainly useful.
- Pleated skirts – they look cute and very fashionable and so modest in a midi version. You can pick any color you like and enjoy it every season.
- Maxi floral skirt – these look so romantic and feminine. Plus, the maxi length is the safest bet for more windy weather 😉
- A-line skirt – I think that’s my favorite design among skirts because it looks elegant and retro. This green one is definitely my favorite – I mean, just look at the color!
Our clothes should give God His glory and represent His values. Make sure your skirt does it too 😉
5. Elegant Trousers
Now, I will surprise you. I rarely wear jeans. I have one pair for working outdoors and then the other pair that I put on… well, twice a year?
There are a few reasons why I am not wearing jeans that often. First of all, the majority of them are simply too tight-looking. Sure, you can find good and modest pairs, but I never had complete peace about any of them.
Second, everybody wears jeans. And honestly, I don’t like them that much. I prefer wearing modest and colorful pants to jeans.
So there comes an important lesson – if something does not feel modest to you, even if it feels modest to somebody else, just don’t wear it. We have different figures, and one lady will look cute and modest in one attire, while the other not so much.
Embrace your uniqueness and choose the trousers that suit you – colorful, elegant, comfortable. For example:
- Classy black ones – if you are a fan of timeless colors.
- More colorful and happy ones, for example, blue.
- Something completely crazy, but still modest.
- Jeans if you want – I cannot recommend specific ones so here you need to trust your instincts.
Trousers are lovely and comfortable and they still can be feminine. So make sure to include some of them in your modest capsule wardrobe.
6. Blouses
If you like elegant vibes, then a proper blouse is a must-have for you. They come in so many shapes and fabrics that you for sure can find a perfect one.
You want to make sure it is not too tight and that the buttons do not stretch out around your breast – this happens often and looks very inappropriate.
At this point, I trust you know which blouses are modest and which ones are not, but these are the ones I recommend:
- Elegant but colorful one – will add a nice touch to any office outfit.
- Short Sleeves – for hot, summer days.
Modest and colorful blouses are feminine and elegant and you can wear them anywhere.
7. Sweaters
For the colder weather modest sweaters come in handy. They look cozy and you can combine them with pants just as well as with a skirt or put it over a dress. See, the options are limitless 🙂
The majority of the sweaters are modest so it all depends on the style you’re aiming at. I can recommend these three:
- Casual knitted one – always classy!
- Oversize and colorful one – is there anything more cozy?
- Cardigan in appealing color – perfect layer to add when it’s colder.
For autumn and winter, a cute sweater or two is a modest essential.
8. Modest and Colorful Accessories
Here you can go all the way in. Bags, shoes, jewelry – to each their own. If something brings you joy and has a reasonable price – it’s a good choice.
Nowadays there is a trend among Christian women to wear ribbons in their hair – and you know what, I absolutely love that! There are a few at affordable prices.
I also like wearing berets which are a significant element of my style.
But you can add anything and transform your plain outfit into something magnificent using only accessories.
But as we know, our biggest decoration is a noble heart so careful with expensive jewelry 😉
Which leads us to the last thing I’ll share in this article:
Seek the Kingdom of God First
We, Godly women, like clothes. There is nothing wrong with that as long as our hearts belong to Jesus. So choosing to please Him rather than to please people sometimes means refusing to wear something or going against the trends.
But hey, you can still create a lovely modest, and colorful capsule wardrobe that will not only be pretty but also point people to God.
In the end, I want to leave you with a question to reflect on:
If God only looked at the way you dress, what would He say about you?
