As Christian women, we want to dress up modestly. As long as it is not that hard to find a few modest dresses and compose a modest capsule wardrobe, obstacles appear when it comes to modest workout clothes.
If you want to be active, maybe attend the gym or run outside, I bet you want to make sure you are dressed in modest workout clothes that are also comfortable.
But where to find such clothes? And how do you distinguish if something is modest or not in sporty attire? Today I will help you find the answer to your questions.
So we will ensure you will also glory God during your workouts! Ready to dive in? 🙂
Should Christian Women Even Work Out?
Well, duh? Working out shows that we care about our bodies and health. Our body is a temple so keeping it in good condition is our responsibility before God.
Of course, we also should be careful and not fall into the slavery of diets or vanity about our looks. But Godly approach to training is clear – respect your body, but do not treat it as your god.
So as long as we do not get obsessed about having a six-pack, we are fine. And how much joy a decent workout gives!
So yeah, I believe every Christian lady should – as long as her health allows – work out regularly in the form that is the most pleasurable for her.
And wearing modest workout clothes of course 🙂
What Clothes Are Not Modest Workout Clothes?
Before I tell you what to look for in modest workout clothes, let’s get something straight.
What I’m about to share might seem controversial, but I think it’s important to say it. Leggings are not modest. Period.
Sure, if you wear them under a dress or even a long sweater that covers your – let’s call things what they are – butt, then fine. But wearing leggings as they are outside of your home is not flattering you or God.
I know in some cultures it is totally normal, but it shouldn’t be. It is far from elegant and has nothing to do with modesty. You want your body to be gracefully covered, not for your butt’s lines to be visible like it’s Christmas in July.
But how about leggings in the gym…? Of course, working out requires us to be a little bit more undressed than on almost every other occasion (with two exceptions – swimming and making love to your husband :)), but we should still be careful.
So super short shorts, tights leggings, or a deep cleavage sports bra are a no-no, that’s obvious. So let’s go into more details:
Modest Workout Clothes – What To Look For
You can freely choose between shirts, tops, pants, and (some) leggings if you pay attention to these rules:
1. No lines – the most important thing making a pair of leggings modest is not exposing your butts too much. Sometimes it is a matter of underwear and sometimes the material plays the role, but the exposed butt belongs somewhere else. In your marriage bedroom!
2. No lines, again – when it comes to sports bras, it is obvious they keep things tighter. But if again, a sports bra shows a cleavage, this line between your breasts is visible, then it is better to wear a shirt over it. Generally, I think if a bra is not fully built up and doesn’t look like a top, working out in just that might seem inappropriate.
3. Keep the balance – if you decide to wear leggings, choose a more baggy top. My mum always used to say “If the bottom part is tight or short, cover up the upper part. If the upper part is a little bit sexy, make the bottom part modest”. The key to modest workout clothes is in the balance.
4. Ask your husband – sometimes some clothes might seem ok for us, while they show our body in a way that does not seem fully modest. I mean, you won’t spend hours in front of a mirror making sure the material accidentally does not wrap around your body in too vulgar way. That’s why a man’s eye is priceless there. It not only helps you figure out which modest workout clothes to wear, but also strengthens the idea of “my body is yours, and yours is mine” in marriage.
Modest Workout Clothes Under 50$
There are plenty of cheap modest workout clothes that I can recommend. I’ve been working out for over 10 years now so I think I have some expertise 🙂 I’m far from Schwarzenegger, but hey, at least I have fun working out.
- jogger pants – it’s a great alternative for leggings if they still feel too much (good choice, I’m proud of you!)
- running shorts – not too short and not too tight, yet still looking fashionable!
- modest tank top – you can stay modest while looking like a professional “gymmer” 🙂
- covered sports bra – for the very hot days, it’s a perfect alternative
- flowy tunic – looks like that’s what people in Jesus’ times would wear to the gym haha
- long sleeve running shirt – for colder weather, that’s a perfect modest option
